Effective May 2022, #donglemadness is now officially ended. I will no longer add new contents and will cease all activities related to Dongle reviews. Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and everything. However think about if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and video clips, this blog could certainly be one of the most beneficial in its field. Good blog!

Thanks for the feedbacks. What you see here on my site is something I do out of boredom sitting here at home for almost 2 years since Covid-19 pandemic started. I have been working from home since then. With Malaysia still embroiled in Covid lockdowns (4th one now), I expect to be further confined until 2022. As much as possible I will enhance my contents but I am not full time dedicated to it, hence why some things look rather haphazard ahahaha

  2. The heart of your writing while appearing agreeable initially, did not sit properly with me personally after some time. Someplace throughout the sentences you were able to make me a believer but just for a while. I still have a problem with your leaps in assumptions and you would do nicely to help fill in those gaps. If you can accomplish that, I would definitely be fascinated.

It was not my intent to convince anyone. This site is an outlet for me to share my adventures trying out audio gears. On top of that, I am a normal user just like anyone else, so excuse me for lack of professionalism in my presentation. These all merely a mean to an end for me to amuse myself, nothing more. Cheers

Hello, Andy, I need an honest opinion from you, I have an iphone 13 and I’m using an apple dongle lightning to 3.5mm and earbuds about 32ohms to 64ohms for now. I want to know, does Avani or Abigail with JCALLY OTG 8pin Lightning to USB Type C Converters can be a big improvement in terms of sound quality and soundstage, I prefer more balanced/neutral, clarity, and more soundstage. Thank you very much.

It does not matter if I am honest or not with my audio opinions, what I do know I am biased to certain preferences and taste. So I will tell you what I do like. Since you will be driving to up 64 Ohm devices, just stick to Apple dongle and be done with. If it sounds great to you then that’s what matter the most. It depends on how critical you want to be with squeezing the best, and also depends on how resolving your earbuds are to pairing of better sources. In my case Apple dongle not cutting it for my gear of choices like Etymotic ER4SR, ER2XR etc, the very minimum a 1 Vrms Avani or Abigail is what I need. You get the idea

Thank you, Sir, Andy. So it means that I will be only needed the dongle like Abigail or Avani if the apple dongle can’t make my earbuds sound good or can’t give output power? So literally it will not give a big improvement if the earbuds I’m using right now already sound good with the apple dongle? Thank you.

Precisely. Earbuds are normally not as resolving as IEMs and if you are already happy with it, then nothing to worry about

Hello, Andy, what do you recommend jcally jm10 or tempotec sonata hd pro? For pc and phone usage. My gears are Faaeal Earbuds, Audio Technica Headphones? Thank you.

Can’t go wrong with any one of them. Both being equally great. JM10 more balanced and smooth, HD Pro being brighter and a bit more energetic. So choose on what you prefer

Great website Andy! I’m really impressed by the the big number of dongle DACs that you have reviewed and especially the huge amount of details that you quote. I believe that it is very professional the way you approach each review. I read a lot of prof reviews and your way does not lack at all. I just bought the MEZE RAI SOLO IEMs and I want to buy a dongle DAC to pair them (the small size and portability is very important that’s why I’m not speaking about bigger DACs). I want to built a system as audiophile as possible and listen to music through my laptop. I would kindly ask you to give me some recommendations. Of course I could easily refer to your 5 star choices but I’m not sure about the synergy issues, that’s why I’m asking.

Thank you so much Paris. You are right about synergy, the cohesion between interconnecting devices play huge role in the quality of the output. I do not know the sound signature of MEZE RAI SOLO as I never tried it. But if I know anything about MEZE house sound which I learned from MEZE 99 Classics, it could potentially be warm and organic sounding yes? If that’s the case then very likely your SOLO would be served better with ESS sort of tuning, something like Colorfly CDA M1, Hidizs S9 Pro or REIYIN DA-PLUS. You see, the majority of my equipment are natively neutral bright and my own experiment showed that I need sources that are not as bright as how ESS DACs would sound, I think you get the idea. I have a feeling that the native sound of Etymotic ER4SR is vastly different from SOLO, so perhaps you can start looking at it from this perspectives. Of course as noted in my ranking systems, they are primarily subjective to my usage and preferences, we are in the hobby of taste after all. Cheers

Thanks Andy for your quick response. On this link you can see the signature of the RAI’s:
https://crinacle.com/graphs/iems/meze-rai-solo/ . The one thing that I realize from the first listening is that they have a very slight V shape, with a little elevated mid base (with no focus on sub base) and generally a neutral and gentle approach through the whole tuning is order not to be bright and harsh. As for the tremble especially, there is a small dump in 6000 and 12000KHz. After 16000KHz it rolls off. This is something that leads a little bit to lucking this extra sparkle at the top end and probably to the detail retrieval (but probably I say because it is too soon to be sure). So maybe it needs a DAC that give this extra sparkle at the top end (and maybe some sub-base).

Then my initial assessment should still be relevant, especially Colorfly CDA M1 and absolutely any of my personal top 5 Dongles (except for Lotoo PAW S2, S2 I treasure for being the smoothest and polished, not so much on pronounced crispy sparkle)

Hi Andy, can you help me about replacing the 4.4 balanced earphone jack with the unbalanced 3.5?
If possible, introduce a tutorial link for this from YouTube. Thank you
